Art Museums: Andy Maus, Plains Art Museum

Andy Maus has led Plains Art Museum as the Director and CEO since July 2016. With its focus on modern and contemporary exhibitions, regional artists, Native American programming, cultural diversity, creative placemaking and overall learning, Plains Art Museum serves both the metro and rural populations of the Fargo-Moorhead region.

A North Dakota native, Maus received both his BA in Studio Art and MS in Public Administration and Nonprofit Management from MSUM in 2002 and 2010, respectively. Previously, Maus served as the Executive Director of the Minnesota Marine Art Museum in Winona, MN. He’s been featured as a keynote speaker at MSUM’s commencement ceremony in 2022, Fargo Moorhead’s Creative Mornings in 2021 and at TEDxFargo in 2017.

“Plains Art Museum is changing what a 21stcentury museum is. The museum sees art viewing and making as practical tools for building a more creative, empathetic and innovative community. We also see art as something that necessarily belongs to everyone, which is why we offer free general admission and countless programs thanks to our charitable supporters. Art museums are organizations that do valuable things— not just places that have valuable things,” Maus said.
