The COVID-19 pandemic put Essentia staff on the frontlines–where they scaled and adapted to the myriad of changes that came their way. From leading the way in virtual visits to ensuring adequate personal protection equipment (PPE), Essentia worked hard to be innovative in keeping both staff and patients safe. “Our colleagues and neighbors inspired us to keep going every day,” Dr. Heegaard says.
“We’ve always felt it is a privilege to serve our community and to be here when needed,” he adds. “And the commitment of our colleagues shined during the pandemic. Nurses, doctors, therapists, nutrition staff, and environmental services staff were regarded as healthcare heroes as the pandemic drew on.”
Essentia is one of only a few health systems in the United States to be certified as a level 3 accountable care organization (ACO) by the National Committee for Quality Assurance. Level 3 is the highest accreditation an ACO can earn. The tertiary medical center is the only four-star hospital in Fargo on the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid’s Care Compare website.
